We had a wander along the river here. Later in spring sand martins nest along the bank and there are also house martins which could be nesting in the buildings at the trout hatchery a bit further along up the hill. Too early today though but I did see my first wheatears. They are our earliest summer visiters, spending the winter in tropical Africa. They stayed just close enough at times to get a pretty good photo or two.
Species count for the area: Wheatear, pippet, blackbird, bluetit, chaffinch, crow,r ed kite, pied wagtail, stonechat, magpie.
Usually there are greywagtails to be seen but not today. This could be a real concern because I have just looked on the RSPB website and it says that they are susceptible to harsh winters and are on the amber list.
