A ‘self taught’ artist I have been painting professionally now for twenty years. I gained degrees in biology and chemistry and trained as a biochemist but always had a love and aptitude for drawing. When my children were young I started watercolour painting classes with professional tutors both locally in Carmarthenshire and also further afield in Pembrokeshire and England. I gained alot of knowledge and still do from excellent learn to paint books and videos that are now readily available. I have also contributed articles that have been published in the popular artists magazine Leisure Painter which you can read here.
Of course the only way to progress is to paint as often as possible and not be afraid to experiment and ‘make a mess’! which I did and continue to do. Recently I have started working in oils and acrylics as well as watercolour. It remains challenging but very enjoyable.
I have participated in the running of two galleries including the Bridge Gallery in Llandeilo for many years but am now concentrating on developing my own work and also continuing to tutor leisure painting courses which I love doing and find very rewarding.
I am also a founder and artist in residence for the Gelli Aur Painters a popular local group of painters who meet regularly in the Church Hall in the nearby village of Gelli Aur (Golden Grove).
The inspiration for my work has always come from the beautiful and diverse landscapes of Wales, especially The Towy Valley where I have my home.
Art Materials List
List of recommended materials for watercolour classes by Wendy Powell-Jones
The items in brackets are not essential…you may like to build up your materials gradually.
Watercolour paper, paints and brushes are very important so don’t buy cheaper versions. I use
Winsor and Newton paints but other quality brands will do the job.
